hi, I’m tracey-LEA

I’m a painter in Aotearoa New Zealand, my work explores memory, belonging, and the quiet power of everyday materials. My paintings often begin with the familiar - a blanket, a pattern, a fragment of wallpaper, and evolve into reflections on how home, craft, and lineage shape identity.

I draw inspiration from the Pattern & Decoration movement and from feminist artists who have reclaimed ornamentation, home-based crafts and subject matter as serious creative languages.

I began painting over twenty years ago, teaching myself for the first decade before studying for a Diploma of Art & Creativity (Honours) at The Learning Connexion in Wellington, then later, a Master of Fine Arts with Second Class Honours at Whitecliffe College in Auckland. During a large portion of that time, I was a single mother working full time, balancing study, work, and raising my two daughters, a rhythm that built the discipline I bring to my practice today.

My paintings have been purchased internationally and shown across New Zealand, including group exhibitions at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art & History, Soul Gallery Hamilton, and Demo Gallery Auckland, and I’ve been a finalist in major national awards such as the Wellington Regional Art Awards (2024) and the NZ Academy of Fine Arts Prize for Visual Art (2025). Earlier in my career, I received the People’s Choice Award at the Mahara Arts Review, an honour that remains especially meaningful to me

My practice continues to evolve around ideas of pattern, exploring how materials and making traditions can carry memory and emotion, but also delight in pattern itself - its repetition, rhythm, and capacity to command attention as the main character.

I live in the Wairarapa, in a little old cottage with Ollie, my Jack Russell & faithful studio companion. Outside the studio, I prioritise time with my family and grandchildren. I love to travel, and when I do, I combine it with an art focus, attending workshops and programs both in Aotearoa and abroad.
