Patterns of Domesticity
This selection of work was created during my Master of Fine Arts degree and draws on the Pattern & Decoration movement and feminist art histories to explore domestic craft traditions as both subject and language. Using sewing pattern paper and wallpaper as key materials, and incorporating sewing pattern pieces as motifs, I reflect on the matrilineal craft traditions of the women in my family. These works position pattern as subject - a visual language that carries memory and emotion, while celebrating the aesthetics of craft and questioning how domestic materials and labour have historically been undervalued
